12/2/13: Boston Ballet's The Nutcracker

Yesterday we were lucky enough to attend the Boston Ballet's presentation of Mikko Nissinen's The Nutcracker.  I have loved this show since I was little and I knew the kids would enjoy it.  The music and dancing were so wonderful and we loved the set.  Being a dancer myself and having a daughter and son who take dance they could appreciate the dancing in the show.
The whole performance was so beautiful and is continuing through December 29th at the Boston Opera House so you still have time to buy tickets.  Buy tickets here.  When the snow started falling it was so magical.

This newer version of the show premiered in 2012.  This year's show features the full company and over 250 Boston Ballet School students.  There are amazing costumes.  My daughter and I kept commenting on the beautiful tutus that the girls had.  There are actually over 350 costumes handmade for this show.  Between the set, the dancing and the music it was just perfect.  It was also nice seeing so many young people there to see the show.
Here is my little ballerina who was inspired by the show to practice some ballet during intermission.  She really enjoyed the show and even could tell me some of the ballet moves that they were doing in the show.  She has been taking ballet since she was 2 1/2.

Here is my Hip Hop dancer showing off his Nutcracker hat that they were giving out in the lobby.  He enjoyed the show too.  I was a little concerned he may not like it but he did.  He especially liked the dancing bear and the fight of the Nutcracker and his soldiers against the rats.
The 43-performances feature 11 different casts, showcasing the vast talent within the Company, and providing many opportunities for dancers to shine in Soloist and Principal roles. Boston Ballet’s newest additions to the roster, Principal Dancers Petra Conti and Eris Nezha, will make their company debuts in The Nutcracker. The couple will perform the roles of Sugar Plum Fairy and The Nutcracker Prince, as well as the Snow Queen and King. Each performance will feature P.I. Tchaikovsky’s renowned score, performed by Boston Ballet Orchestra named, “the best Nutcracker orchestra in the country” by Newsweek.

Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker is based on the libretto by Alexandre Dumas père titled The Tale of the Nutcracker, which is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The story follows the wondrous journey of young Clara, who receives a nutcracker as a gift at her family’s Christmas Eve party. Later that night, her nutcracker magically transforms into a handsome prince, who leads her through an enchanted forest and on to the Nutcracker Prince’s Kingdom.
I highly suggest taking the family to see it and starting a family tradition or continuing one if you already have been.
